Establishing Continuity When Shooting
The 30 Degree Rule:
Rather than interpreting it literally, think about
a significant change in angle or distance for each
shot. Does it show us something new?
The 180 Degree Rule:
Choose a dramatic axis for the scene, and use it to
maintain screen direction for eyeline and movement.
Avoid cutting directly to the other side of the axis.
To change screen direction, try a
moving shot that crosses the axis, or cut to a POV
from a character on the other side.
In shooting a moving character, a Head-On shot can
be used to change screen direction
while maintaining continuity.
1) Left to Right screen direction.
2) Head On, then Right to Left as
character leaves the frame. The axis changes within
the shot. 3) Right to Left screen
direction.
The same principle can be used to allow screen
direction to change when a character turns
a corner:

Or to maintain constant screen direction
at a corner, keep the camera on the same side of the
character's path at all times
